WITH obesity at epidemic proportions in our society, it's now more important than ever to ensure children get exercise.

Futsal is a sporting craze now gaining a foothold in the Hunter and the junior competition has been designed to cater for players from age six.

Made famous by the South Americans, futsal is basically indoor soccer and it is played by millions of people around the world.

Hunter Futsal Soccer and Sports (HFSS) is a member of the Northern NSW Soccer Federation.

HFSS offers individuals and teams the chance to play futsal all-year round at three centres Broadmeadow, Gateshead and Maitland.

General manager George Poulos is well-known in the region's soccer community.

"Members of our clubs are insured through the Northern NSW Soccer Federation and, as a member, you have the opportunity to play in a number of extra special events such as club championships, state championships and national championships," Mr Poulos said.

"So whether you want to play for fun, for fitness or at a professional level, there will be a competition to suit you.

"For those who are interested only for the fun of the game we can assure [them] that futsal is a great team sport with lots of goals, fun and fitness elements."
